The First Sail Away
After the saga of getting to Chioggia the sail away from the port was fairly picturesque. It was a beautiful day, a bit warm, though the breeze over the bow sorted that.
We firstly sailed through the Venice lagoon then the MOSE gates
MOSE
The gates are a part of MOSE – Modulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico. There are three sets of gates installed at the three inlets, Lido, Malamocco and Chioggia, to the Venice lagoon.
When they are raised they seal of the lagoon from Adriatic Sea during the acqua alta high tides.
The gates are raised when the tides are forecasted to exceed 1.3m (4.3ft) and will prevent tides of up to 3m (9.8ft) from entering the lagoon, protecting Venice.
Bilancione
After passing the MOSE gates we sailed past a number of stilted fishing huts, some are now restaurants.
The fishing approach that they use is called Bilancione, the nets are dropped into the sea from the huts and catch the fish as they swim by, well I guess that is how it works.
Definitely something to check out the next time I am in the area.

Sunset
The first sunset of the cruise was pretty impressive.
Though the Zadar Sunset later in the cruise was my favourite.
The Itinerary
As a reminder of my next couple of weeks sailing along the Dalmatian Coast and through the Greek Isles on the Adriatic Sea.
It is a hard life I know. Time for dinner and a drink or two.
