Dinner at Copper Singapore

Dinner at Copper Singapore

logoCopper is a new restaurant in Singapore, the bar has been open since late 2014, but the restaurant only opened in the past month or so. This dinner at Copper Singapore was one of the more enjoyable meals I have had in this year.

We, Robert of Wine Exchange Asia  who arranged the dinner, and I were looked after by the owner Alex, he is the one standing at the head of the table looking serious, the entire night, which added to the occasion. Alex chose every item within Copper, from the hand-made stemware through to the chandelier. I really like the feel of the place and the food it has to be experienced to understand how good it is, hopefully my photos will do it justice.

My Rant

The number of no-shows at restaurants in Singapore is on the rise and on the Friday Night that we dined at Copper only one other table turned up, even though the restaurant was booked out, there should have been around twelve people dining, in the end there were only four.

This lack of courtesy shown by the people booking tables and not showing up or even calling the restaurant to tell them that they can’t make it is apparently on the rise. The impact of this sort of thing is that the restaurants affected are unable to accept other bookings and waste the food that was ordered and prepared for the meals that were to be served. With small restaurants this has a huge impact because of the loss of revenue but the costs associated remain the same. What is worse is that there are apparently groups who are booking tables in multiple restaurants and then picking one of them on the night and not cancelling the bookings.

Not sure what can be done to stop it a part from create a list and prevent them from booking in the future, but it would not be hard for the inconsiderate fools to use another name to make their bookings for them!

That is it for my rant!

Now for the food and wine!!

Before dinner, whilst having a martini, I took these shots of the sunset and moon rise.

We were lucky enough to get another reservation in Signatures. The food and service, were as usual excellent, just wish my memory was as good as I was not able to remember everything we ate.

2014 South America Cruise Day 7 – Coquimbo Chile

2014 South America Cruise Day 7 – Coquimbo Chile

On day 7 of our 2014 South America Cruise we arrived in Coquimbo, Chile. Just like the previous ports in Peru and Chile, Coquimbo is situated within Atacama Desert. This time there is a bit of green around. Today’s tour was to the Enchanted Valley followed by a visit to Tabali Vineyard in the Limari Valley.

2014 South America Cruise Day 7 - Coquimbo Chile

The Tour

COQ-004 PETROGLYPHS AND VINEYARDS IN THE LIMARI VALLEY

We depart from the pier and drive south on the Pan-American Highway, along the coast and past beautiful beaches such as La Herradura, Las Tacas, and Guanaqueros. As we leave the coast behind, we will observe the permanent thick fog known as camanchaca, or coastal clouds, above the hillside, a phenomenon that produces moisture in this area. Then, going inland to the east, we will see crops of “pepino“, here called sweet cucumber – and the raising of cattle.

We will drive towards “Enchantment Valley” traveling on a country road. This valley has great archaeological importance, being considered an open-air museum of scientific and cultural interest. The “El Molle Culture” and other groups of hunters inhabited this valley from circa 2,000 B.C. until A.D. 600. In this area, it is possible to find an incredible and interesting number of petroglyphs depicting masks, heads with antennae, tiaras, sun symbols and snake-like and fish-like shapes deeply engraved in rocks. Also, it is possible to see pictographs of lineal drawings, human beings and other figures in natural paint. We will also have the opportunity of seeing the small cup stones or Piedras Tacitas.

Continue along the Road of Grapes and Vineyards towards Tabalí Vineyard. The offer from Viña Tabalí consists of eight different types of wine, each one with its own special and distinctive characteristics. The main characteristic present in its two lines; Reserve and Special Reserve; is that both were prepared “over a slow fire” as a result of a very moderate climate where the maximum and minimum temperatures are not extreme and where there is scanty rainfall. You will have an informative visit of the winery followed by a wine tasting, along with some snacks and refreshments before returning to the ship.

The ship docked at midday and we then left on our tour at about 1:30. Our guide for today was Judith, an English Lady who has been living in the region for around 15 years. Guess that she used to be a school teacher by the way she taught us about the region. She was by far the best tour guide we had for the entire cruise.

There is obviously a very eclectic mix of people who live there. Really wished we had more time to explore it further, but we had a long drive to get to the Enchanted Valley so no time to spare.

2014 South America Cruise Day 6 – At Sea

2014 South America Cruise Day 6 – At Sea

Day 6 was the first sea-day of our 2014 South America Cruise. Sea-days are a great way to relax and enjoy a wine tasting and the facilities of the Mariner at a leisurely pace!!

2014 South America Cruise Day 6 - At Sea

What a beautiful day to be at sea, sailing the Pacific Ocean down the Chilean Coast, and people wonder why I like the sea!

2014 South America Cruise Day 6 - At Sea

Breakfast was in Compass Rose, had to try the Banana Pancakes, they were excellent. The food on-board was great, although a bit more chili would not hurt.

2014 South America Cruise Day 6 - At SeaAfter breakfast the first Wine Tasting of the cruise was scheduled where the Head Sommelier, Gergana Malakeva, Gerri, presented the “Wines Around The World”.

The idea behind this tasting is to showcase the wines available as a part of the overall package and to introduce the premium wines on the Connoisseurs List that are available for a price. They usually discount a few of the wines to try to entice a purchase or three, the prices are ok, considering we are on-board a ship.

2014 South America Cruise Day 6 - At Sea

A few of the wines on the Connoisseurs List, the Screaming Eagle and Grange are missing.

2014 South America Cruise Day 6 - At Sea

Tasted a few good wines, but nothing to rave about.

2014 South America Cruise Day 6 - At Sea

My only complaint is that the Sommeliers were a bit light on the pour, which is not a big deal when you can grab a drink 24 hours a day on-board.

The wines that were tasted. My favourite white was the Frascati, none of the reds stood out as that better than the others, but they were all of a good standard.

This cruise was Gerri’s first cruise as the Head Sommelier. Gerri knows her stuff and loves to teach people about wine! Her husband, Anatoli, is also working on-board, he was promoted from Head Sommelier to Assistant Food and Beverage Manager, which makes him her boss.

Re-post from my 2014 Cruise due to corruption that occurred during the migration of my blog.

2014 South America Cruise Day 5 – Dinner in Singatures

2014 South America Cruise Day 5 – Dinner in Singatures

For dinner on Day 5 I had a booking in Signatures, the French restaurant on-board the Seven Seas Mariner. The whole restaurant was furnished by Versace, including the tableware. A little over the top for me, but the food, wine and service make up for it. Eric, the Maitre D’Hotel, makes sure that every guest enjoys their meals and the “Signatures Experience”.

So far all of the ports we have visited have been in the Atacama Desert and Iquique Chile was no different, another place to return to one day and explore further.
