My second day in Reykjavik Iceland was another beautiful “summer’s day”, mid teens C with, mainly, clear blue skies. I had no agenda today other than to wander the streets again.
Street Art
Reykjavik is very artistic, everywhere you look there is some interesting street art
Sculptures
In addition to the street art there are a lot of sculptures that are randomly placed around the town.
Hallgrímskirkja Church
Hallgrímskirkja is a Lutheran Church that is visible from a lot of vantage points around Reykjavik and is definitely striking. It took 41 years to build it, starting in 1945 finishing in 1976. The local Lutheran Church changed the design, height, so that it would be taller than the Catholic Cathedral, Landakotskirkja. Nothing like a bit of rivalry between Churches.
More Wander Pics
Swans
Whilst wandering around the streets I came across Tjörnin Lake.
A picturesque lake with a lot of bird life including a flock of Whooper Swans.
Lunch
A morning of wandering around Reykjavik meant I had bit of hunger to be sated.. Earlier in the day I had passed a couple of restaurants along the waterfront and as I had wandered back that way thought I would give one a go. Hofnin is the place I chose.
Decided that the Icelandic Mussels were the way to go, and I was right. They were excellent, especially with garlic and chili. The freshly baked bread and coffee were not bad either.
Harpa Concert Hall and Convention Centre
The Harpa Concert Hall is another building that you can’t miss as you wander around Reykjavik. It opened in 2011 and is an interesting sight on sunny day with the light refraction off of the glass facade. My photos don’t do it justice.
The Sun Voyager
On the way from the ship to my hotel I saw a sculpture on the waterfront that decided needed a look. The Sun Voyager is meant to inspire dreams of hope. I liked this a lot, so did all of the kids who were climbing all over it.
More randomness around Reykjavik
Reykjavik
This is a place where I am really glad I decided not to go on an organised tour. The streets are clean and have a lot of quirky buildings, sculpture and street art that you would miss if you were on a bus.
This is a place I need to return to… Just wait for the food and drinks…
