For dinner on our last night in Venice we were recommended Trattoria da Mario alla Fava by the Concierge of our hotel.
I had been warned about the recommendations of the Concierge’s in Venice, but as the original place we wanted to go was a pretty upmarket place the recommendation of a restaurant that was more affordable and accessible I thought it must be good… Why else recommend the place, there is no benefit to the Concierge. Glad we took his advice!
We had walked passed multiple times each day and never looked twice at it as during the day as the courtyard was always empty. In the late afternoon that all changed, it became a bustling place.
We were seated outside on a very pleasant evening and, unfortunately, looked after by an overly attentive group of staff.. We had to ask them to relax a few times. Whilst we are obviously “very special” we do need the opportunity finish a bite or sip before being asked about the next one…
Bubbles
To kick off the night we started with an enjoyable Rosé Champagne made by an Italian wine maker, Alberto Massucco. The grapes are from Champagne and it is made according to method champenoise so it is Champagne, one with a bit of Italian flair. Oz’s Wine Rating 3.5 out 5.
The Red
As it was our last night in Venice why not go out with a decent bang! A 2016 Quintarelli Valpolicella Classico Superiore. An awesome drop.. Oz’s Wine Rating 4 out 5. Would love to taste this again in about 5 years.
The Food
I didn’t take notes on what we ate as that would have been impolite. I had thought that taking a photo of the menu would have been a help, unfortunately the menu I have does not line up with the dishes. Let’s just say that it tasted as good as looked.
The Raw Seafood Platter
Never Enough Seafood
Pasta and Main
Dessert
I checked online and Trattoria da Mario alla Fava updates its dessert menu, so missed what we had as well.
Definitely tasty….. Chocolate spaghetti with lime ice-cream was interesting look at and enjoyable to eat.
Limoncello
A nice touch was leaving a bottle of the house Limoncello with us to accompany our desserts and to finish off a very enjoyable meal.
Trattoria da Mario alla Fava
Thanks to the advice of our friends, the hotel Concierge and a bit of luck, we never had an average meal in Venice and Trattoria da Mario alla Fava was a highlight.
When I return to Venice, this would definitely be one of the places I would return to… The only negative was the over attentive staff, they got the message after a bit and relaxed.
They also have a pretty decent wine list and would recommend giving the Alberto Massucco bubbles a go, though it would be hard to pass up the Quintarelli. Why not go with both or more..
My View
Another great night in Venice
Whilst it was pretty warm whilst we were in Venice, it was not as oppressive as I was advised it would be. The nights were especially pleasant.
