Dinner in the Seven Seas Mariner’s Prime 7 restaurant is always an enjoyable experience and this meal was no different. For something different, I dined by myself and instead of my usual Steak had the Lobster.
The staff of Prime 7 always go out of their way to ensure that everyone who dines in Prime 7 has a meal to remember every time. For this meal I was looked after by Shah, a great guy from India who is very interested in cricket, so we had a lot to talk about.
The traditional start to a meal in Prime 7 is a slider, a mini hamburger, which I had with a glass of 2013 Backhouse Pinot Noir, a wine that is usually ok. The Pinot had a ruby-red colour, with a cherry aroma, it is quite dry with a fairly short finish, not bad for the price.
For my soup I had a very enjoyable clam chowder.
My main was whole lobster with butter sauce. I did not enjoy the lobster as much as I hoped, it looked great, but I found the it to be a bit bland, prefer the crayfish from South Australia, which have a rich, sweet taste.
With my main course I had the 2012 Hess Select Cabernet Sauvignon, deep purple in colour, with dark cherry and subtle oak aromas, plum and spice flavours, soft tannins and nice finish. A very good value wine.
For dessert I had to try the popcorn ice-cream sundae, and I am glad that I did. For me this was the best dessert on offer on the ship and had a few more times during the cruise. Paired with the dessert was a 2011 Late Harvest Muscatel from the Limari Valley in Chile. This Muscatel was excellent, pale gold colour, with ripe stone fruit aromas, balanced sweetness and acidity, producing a lush, long and very enjoyable finish. Wine of the night for me.
I visited the Limari Valley on my previous cruise and was lucky enough to try a few of the wines, can’t wait to get back there and continue my education.

Even though I did not enjoy my main course, the service and the other dishes were excellent and the house wines were enjoyable, especially the Late Harvest Muscatel.

Agreed on the Lobster – I usually have it with garlic butter to get anything out of it if its Yankee Lobster…
Will have to remember that for next time, maybe a bit of chili in with the garlic
